Job Summary: | The Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a visionary, innovative leader to serve as Director. The ideal candidate, who will hold an endowed position as the Pamela O. Hamel/Board of Advisors Director, will be committed to furthering the development of a forward-looking curriculum and to promoting the University of Wisconsin-Madison's vibrant artistic community. This candidate will provide leadership in keeping with the University's tradition of shared governance and will guide the School of Music to develop and realize its mission. The Director will report to the Dean of the College of Letters & Science.
Within the University's shared-governance structure, the Director, as the departmental executive, serves as the official channel of communication between the Mead Witter School of Music and all other university officials. The Director works closely with the School of Music's Budget and Personnel Committee (an elected subcommittee of the Executive Committee of tenured faculty) with the Associate Director, and with School of Music faculty and staff to build on the success of the School of Music. | Responsibilities: | The Director will help to identify and implement actions that promote and advance the School's vision and goals. The Director's actions will take place within several spheres:
In the area of faculty administration, the Director will: - Mentor probationary faculty, meet with tenure committees to ensure a successful probationary review process, and draft subsequent reappointment letters; - Work with tenure committees on the final tenure vote process and creation of the tenure dossier; - Make requests to the Dean for faculty searches; - Oversee both the post-tenure review process and promotions to Associate and Full Professor; - Appoint search committees and ensure that searches adhere to all University policies and protocols; - Appoint faculty and staff members to department committees; - Nominate faculty for research and teaching awards; - Handle personnel issues related to faculty and staff; - Facilitate team-building within the shared-governance structure; - Support and facilitate faculty, staff, and student recruitment activities; - Articulate and implement a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and to mentoring and empowering historically underrepresented or marginalized faculty, staff, and students.
In the area of teaching and learning, the Director is responsible for maintaining and extending the excellence of the Mead Witter School of Music. The Director will work with the Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies on curricular planning and assessment at all levels. The Director will pursue creation of new scholarship/fellowship opportunities and oversee administration of existing ones. And the Director will participate in delivering the curriculum by teaching a reduced course load.
In the area of financial administration, the Director will provide budgetary oversight through shared governance. Working with the Budget and Personnel Committee, Executive Committee, and college administration, the Director will set and administer budgetary priorities and will oversee the School's salary structure. The School of Music has a budget of $6.4 million in addition to $39 million in endowments at the UW Foundation.
In the area of advancement and fundraising, the Director will collaborate with faculty, staff, and institutional leaders to determine goals, and with the department's Director of Development to implement those goals. The Director will provide donor stewardship and cultivate new donors.
In the area of general administration, the Director will inspire and realize an energetic vision for the School, will oversee the School's Board of Advisors, and will act as liaison to the Division of the Arts and other campus- or college-wide entities.
