The Office of Religious & Spiritual Life at Bucknell University seeks a spirited, hospitable Director of Music at Rooke Chapel.
The Rooke Chapel congregation has gathered continuously at Bucknell University for over 50 years, providing space for vibrant, multicultural, student-centered, intergenerational, Ecumenical/Protestant Christian worship.
The Director of Music has primary responsibility for the Rooke Chapel Vocal Ensemble - a paid student ensemble, which sings weekly choral anthems in worship, gathers regularly for social gatherings and fellowship, and welcomes all student singers who are committed to making a joyful noise in worship.
The ideal candidate will be a relationship-centered musician with a passion for working with a diverse group of students to lead and make music as part of a worshiping community.
Job Duties: Coordinate and lead a vibrant music ministry of both professional and student musicians. Select choral repertoire to be used during chapel services. Direct the Rooke Chapel Vocal Ensemble during weekend rehearsals and chapel services in collaboration with the University Organist (typically currently a Saturday evening rehearsal, Sunday Morning warm-up, worship, lunch, and short rehearsal). Recruit, hire, train and supervise student assistants to serve as musicians and members of the vocal ensemble. Work in collaboration with the Rooke Chapel Gospel Fellow during monthly Gospel music services (a note - there will be the opportunity to combine these two positions beginning with the 2023-24 school year). Build a sense of community and belonging with student choir members. Partner with the Bucknell Handbell Ensemble, Brass Quintet, and other campus/ student musicians to bring a range of musical expression into Rooke Chapel.
Minimum Qualifications: Strong communication skills One or more years of experience in choral leadership and/or sacred music leadership, or equivalent Undergraduate degree (or equivalent experience). Strong desire to work with College students in a welcoming community of faith Commitment to inclusive excellence in artistic practice Broad knowledge of an array of choral and sacred music Preferred Qualifications: Keyboard instrumental proficiency is an asset Advanced degree in music (open to currently enrolled students) Work Type: This is a casual, non-benefits eligible position, typically scheduled up to 10 hours per week August through May.
This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.
Salary Range: This is a Staff Non-Exempt position with a hiring range of $24 - $30. The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
