Who we are:
Serving thousands of member organizations and individuals since 1957, the Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) is the national service, advocacy, and membership organization for the live performing arts field. APAP is dedicated to developing and supporting a robust performing arts presenting, booking and touring industry and the professionals who work within it.
APAP has a 22-member board of directors led by Chair Renae Williams Niles. Lisa Richards Toney serves as APAP’s President and CEO, leading a core staff of 11, a part-time year-round and seasonal staff of more than 20 employees, and independent contractors.
For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, APAP reported total revenue of $4.7 million, with $948K from earned revenue and $3.7 million in contributed revenue, the latter of which was primarily from foundation support. The fiscal year 2023 budget is expected to be $4.7 million, with $1 million sourced from contributed revenue.
The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting financial challenges forced APAP to augment its business model to include significant contributed income in order to continue to provide our acclaimed and much needed services to members and the performing arts field. During this time, we also learned that demand for our services and offerings are expected to increase as the live arts industry returns to work in a changed environment. While the annual conference will remain an important focus for the Association, the opportunity and need to support a broader stroke of the field in expanding access to APAP’s resources -- including a more structured year-round presence and offerings -- is compelling as we look to broaden and deepen our revenue sources.
APAP currently has four major interconnected priorities that inform the work of the organization:

APAP will embark on the second round of our strategic planning process in the fall of 2022. The Director of Development will be integral to this process in creating the resource development strategy, as a key focus of the new strategic framework will involve evolving APAP’s business model to include new revenue sources.

What you’ll bring to APAP:
APAP seeks a knowledgeable, dynamic, and creative Director of Development to provide senior-level leadership and operational oversight of the organization’s resource development initiatives in support of APAP’s brand, our mission, vision, values, and revenue goals. We are looking for someone with “starter energy” and a zeal for building a strong foundation for contributed income.
The Director of Development must be a sophisticated relationship builder who is able to adapt their communication style to work effectively with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders with multiple priorities, including the President/CEO, APAP Board of Directors, members of the senior leadership team and staff, as well as a diverse set of fund holders and fund development prospects.
In close partnership with the President/CEO, develop and administer APAP’s resource development initiatives.
Annually set strategic goals and objectives to ensure effective and timely growth and the advancement of APAP’s mission.
Help create and lead overall resource development strategy for individuals, corporations, and foundations, including major prospect cultivation and planned giving.
Manage advertising and sponsorship solicitation and fulfillment in conjunction with Marketing, Conference and Programs departments.
Work closely with the Resource Development Committee of the Board of Directors to craft enterprise-wide partnership and sponsorship opportunities.
Help develop agendas for committee meetings and inspire committee members and the board to be knowledgeable, effective ambassadors.
In collaboration with consultants and the Finance department, administer and monitor APAP’s grant funding portfolio.
Serve as staff liaison to members and consultants on all resource development-related projects.
Work collectively with internal teams on messaging and storytelling for the Association.
Build donor prospect lists from organizational Customer Relations Management system for delivery of communications.
Participate in content curation for donor cultivation programming and events.
Manage work of development consultants and, prospectively, development staff as the department expands.
Development and management of departmental budget.
Other duties, as assigned.
Desired Skills and Qualifications
Preference of seven years of development experience in fundraising efforts in an entrepreneurial nonprofit or arts and culture environment.
Understanding of REDI (Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) principles and how they fit into communication and organizational practice.
Mature individual with ability to drive agendas forward by building strong internal partnerships with diverse groups of constituents.
Demonstrated success in networking to build creative and mutually beneficial business relationships within the corporate, public, and nonprofit sectors.
History of working with individual, legacy, corporate, foundation, and government sources, and proven ability to expand and cultivate donor relationships over time.
Grant writing and gift solicitation experience.
Proven experience and knowledge of the full spectrum of development, including planned giving, gift solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, and administration.
Strategic, analytical approach combined with professionalism and charisma.
Strong organizational, writing and public speaking skills.
Ability to think strategically and creatively in a cross-functional capacity within a full team of employees.
Experience in project and staff management.
Ability to anticipate issues, prevent problems, and troubleshoot challenges.
Strong organizational/time-management skills and attention to detail are essential.
Must be able to juggle multiple projects in a high-profile, deadline-driven environment.
Good judgement, sensitivity, and responsiveness to the unique needs of a national service and membership organization and the range of audiences it serves.
Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, throughout the organization and across the different sectors of the industry.
