Salem State University’s award-winning Department of Theatre and Speech Communication seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in performance to teach voice and diction training and serve as a vocal coach on productions in our NAST-accredited BFA and BA theatre program. This faculty member will primarily support the department's Bachelor of Fine Arts acting concentration and will teach Voice for Performance, as well as Dialects. There will be opportunities to serve as a vocal and dialect coach on production, and to teach additional courses and participate in the professor’s area of interest. Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, scholarship and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.
Master of Fine Arts in a performance-based discipline, such as acting or directing
A minimum of three years of teaching experience in higher education at the undergraduate or graduate level
Significant experience in voice and speech pedagogies, techniques, and training methodologies, including but not limited to: IPA, dialects, Berry, Rodenberg, Linklater, Lessac, Hart, Fitzmaurice, as well as non-western forms of voice and speech training
A dossier of professional accomplishments as a vocal coach
An understanding of the changing linguistic needs of the actor in an evolving professional and global landscape
Evidence of teaching, and/or mentoring developing actors in the classroom and regionally
Ability to collaborate with students, staff, and faculty in a rigorous theatre program or company
The ability to teach and engage with identity-conscious and culturally-sensitive students, faculty, and staff
