| The Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Director, Fellowships and Awards. This is a full-time, twelve-month, continuing Administrative and Professional Staff position reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, working collaboratively with the Center for Engaged Liberal Arts and members of the General Faculty Fellowships Committee.
Founded in 1833, Oberlin is a private four-year, selective liberal arts college near Cleveland, Ohio and is also home to an outstanding Conservatory of Music. Together, the two divisions enroll approximately 2900 students. Oberlin College was the first college in the US to make interracial education and co-education central to its mission. Among liberal arts colleges, Oberlin is a national leader in securing national fellowships and awards, and successfully placing graduates into PhD programs. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following duties: - Direct the Office of Fellowships and Awards, including budgeting, hiring, and managing support staff. Establish and maintain a network of alumni volunteers to recruit and advise fellowships applicants.
- Serve as an ex officio member and primary staff person of the General Faculty Fellowships Committee.
- Establish and maintain connections with foundations and providers of fellowships and bring new fellowships to the attention of the faculty fellowships committee.
- Serve as official advisor for national fellowships, including Fulbright and other programs as required.
- Collaborate with and support faculty members who serve as official advisors of national fellowships.
- Coordinate selection and endorsement processes for all programs requiring College endorsement, including Boren, Goldwater, Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Truman, and Watson; draft related endorsement letters in collaboration with faculty advisors and senior staff.
- Coordinate application and selection processes for internal awards competitions including Oberlin Alumni Fellowships and others.
- Assist faculty in identifying students who may be potential candidates for fellowships. Advise and encourage interested students to take the necessary steps to become viable applicants for fellowships and awards. Advise fellowship applicants on writing proposals, personal statements, interviewing, and other aspects of the application process. Coordinate practice interviews as appropriate.
- Teach a one-module course on application writing each year. Organize, in collaboration with faculty and staff, fellowships information sessions and related events.
- Regularly update fellowship information online and oversee maintenance of the fellowships website, track application and outcome information.
- Collaborate with the Dean of Arts and Sciences to connect fellowship information with advising.
- Work collaboratively with the Career Center and the Center for the Engaged Liberal Arts to offer career programs and provide useful career resources.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Arts and Sciences.
