The Organization â University of Southern California Radio Group:
USC Radio Group (USCRG) is the parent entity for two of Americaâs top classical radio stations, Classical California KUSC and Classical California KDFC, along with the fast-growing Classical California digital platform. Â KUSC and KDFC have been championing the power of classical music for over 70 years in Los Angeles and the Bay Area/San Francisco through great music, support of the arts, and compelling storytelling from knowledgeable hosts. Â USCRG is a division within USCâs University Relations, which is responsible for advancing the universityâs cultural, civic, community, and educational missions.
USCRG is a thriving broadcast entity that includes the two flagship and 10 additional FM station transmitters across California. Â Together with a robust digital presence, USCRG provides classical radio music to over 2 million listeners. Â The stations are all licensed to the University of Southern California (USC), one of the worldâs leading research universities with an unparalleled commitment to classical music and the arts. Â In April 2022, USCRG launched Classical California, a new umbrella brand, providing a space where KUSC and KDFC can co-exist alongside new digital services that nurture a love of classical music for all. Â With an annual budget of $18 million, a $130 million comprehensive campaign underway, a talented staff and a strong strategic plan, USCRG is well-positioned for future success.
Located in downtown Los Angeles, KUSC is the largest and most listened to classical music station in the country. KDFC, located in the San Francisco Arts District, recently moved into its new state-of-the-art Batishwa Miner Broadcast Center located within the also-new Bowes Performing Arts Center at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Together with Classical California digital content and events, both stations are dedicated to making a positive impact on people and communities by championing the power of classical music.
USCRG has gone through historic, positive and successful growth over the last several years. Â Itâs in Year 2 of a groundbreaking 5-year strategic plan, highlighted by the creation of Classical California. Â They are enjoying the fruits of its successful campaign to fund and build out a new KDFC broadcast. Â And, it has created an internal work environment of collaboration and team-orientation, with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, working to blend the cultures of the two stations to create a space of creativity and empowerment.Â The strategic plan is focused on five priorities:
Developing the cohesive Classical California brand with increased marketing to drive engagement and awareness; Evolving from a radio mainstay to a digital pioneer, while ensuring the continued strength of the radio presence; Creating meaningful and enriching community and member engagement; Inventing a sustainable and evolved membership model; Building inclusive content and engagement for new and potential audiences as well as an inclusive, respectful workplace for all Radio group employees.
Thus, the outgoing President, Judy McAlpine, is leaving a legacy of success with a strong foundation for her successor to build upon in the coming years. Â The organization is on the cusp of great growth and opportunity and is on very solid financial footing, despite the challenges from the global pandemic. Â USCRGâs endowment, reserves, and operating revenue have all increased over the last few years and are in excellent condition.
And yet, there is so much opportunity for continued innovation and growth. On behalf of USCRG, the President can and will be an out-facing leader in the arts and civic communities in Los Angeles and San Francisco (including growing in-person engagement and special events â with both existing listeners and new, untapped audiences); major donor fundraising still has significant potential with untapped audiences and new fundraising pathways; the Classical California digital presence is growing and ripe for a leader who can scale growth and creativity; once the lease for the Downtown Los Angeles studio space is up for renewal, it will provide an opportunity to explore whether to conduct a modernization project, or identify other location options.
USCRG also has the unique position of being part of global university. Â There is significant collaborative and subject-matter expertise to tap into through strategic partnerships with its 23 schools and administrative departments. Â Highlights include the USC Thornton School of Music, Annenberg School of Communication, USC School of Cinematic Arts, and the USC Iovine & Young Academy for Arts, Technology, and Business Innovation.Â USCâs University Advancement department is also a key partner for development along with USCRGâs advisory Board of Councilors.
In short, USCRG has never been better positioned for growth and impact, and is transforming from a collection of radio stations and digital platform to a well-rounded arts organization that serves growing audiences in California and across the globe. Â
Reporting to the SVP, University Relations (who in turn reports to USC President, Carol Folt), the President, USC Radio Group will oversee all staff, operations, finances and content of KUSC, KDFC and the digital platform. Â This person will be both the lead external face of USCRG and its efforts, as well as a dynamic, empathetic and inspiring internal leader, who will grow, develop and evolve a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, transparency and empowerment.
Specifically, the President will work closely with the Philanthropy group and across the civic landscape to help play a key role in securing major gifts for USC Radio. Â This person will also work with arts leaders in Los Angeles and San Francisco (such as with the heads of Symphonies, Operas and other organizations) to help bring classical music to the public and will oversee distribution of content on all existing and emerging technology platforms (as well as through live events), leveraging these opportunities to expand USC Radio to new communities and listeners.Â This professional will not be afraid to drive change and continue to foster a culture of connection, teamwork and unity between the Los Angeles and San Francisco operations. This leader will also be the lead advocate representing USCRG within USC itself.
In short, the President will lead this burgeoning arts organization with a mission to increase opportunities for those from all diverse communities within Los Angeles and San Francisco to connect with, be involved in and have access to classical music.
Thus, the next President will be a seasoned, experienced and mature organizational leader who is capable of developing, communicating and executing a vision and yet whose fundamental nature is one of team-orientation and collaboration. Â This individual will have run a nonprofit and will ideally have experience in digital, public media and radio. Â The President will see the opportunities with emerging technological platforms and will be curious how audiences receive different content on different platforms.Â
Demonstrated experience with, and knowledge of, nonprofit fundraising is key, as is a transparent and proactively communicative style, and the ability to listen, empower others and be present. This person will be both scrappy and not afraid to roll up their sleeves while being comfortable and collaborative within a large anchor institution like USC (the largest private employer in Los Angeles).
Importantly, this person does not have to be trained in classical music but they absolutely must have a passion for, and substantive familiarity with the genre. Â This leader will be excited about working with other leaders in the genre and about leading a classical music-driven arts organization. Â In this way, the next President, USCRG will have a tremendous opportunity to affect not only the organization, but the future of classical music in Los Angeles, San Francisco and beyond.

Fundraising and Community Engagement
Drive the growth of USCRG and maintain, evaluate, and execute an effective development plan.
Lead the evolution of USCRG to becoming a fully balanced, integrated development and philanthropy-centered organization in Southern and Northern California.
Take a lead role in fundraising, particularly related to major gifts, grants, foundations, making client calls with the underwriting team, and be very comfortable and adept at soliciting support.
Work closely with USCâs University Advancement on shared donor relations, CRM infrastructure, and development-related strategies, where appropriate.
Represent the USCRG to local business and cultural organizations and participate in the leadership of USCRG in Southern and Northern California and throughout the coverage area.
Generate effective marketing to better engage USCRG in the community and attract new audiences and demographics.
Content Strategy and Development
Oversee a long-term content strategy across all available channels and platforms to ensure that USCRG reaches and engages loyal audiences on all platforms.
Work closely with the VP Content to define and execute a cross-platform programming strategy that puts audiences first.
Take an entrepreneurial and creative approach to developing innovative content.
Seek and analyze data from a variety of sources to support decisions and to align others with the organization's overall strategy.
Possess a clear grasp of media usage, marketing, population patterns and trends, and able to adjust course of organization in response.

Business and Financial Stewardship
Provide direction and counsel to USCRG leadership team to build and diversify revenue.
Collaborate with the Senior Business Officer to develop a viable financial plan for the organization, provide increased transparency of financial information and execute that plan.
Maintain and assure effective financial systems and reporting.
Ensure compliance with all University, State, Federal and FCC regulations.
Represent USCRG interests across USC and with key organizations such as Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Performing Arts organizations and Music schools, and the FCC.
Board of Councilors
Help assure and support a strong and effective volunteer board by maintaining strong relationships with each member, assuring that those members are informed, involved, and engaged in the planning and oversight of USCRG.
Partner with the Board on strategic planning/future facilities/capital campaign initiatives while facilitating staff participation.
Recommend and recruit board members who reflect the diversity of communities in the KUSC and KDFC coverage areas.

The President will have a strong orientation towards fundraising, including major gifts and grants.Â They will work across the civic and potential donor landscape, solicit support and see new opportunities beyond the traditional sources. They will also have the ability to articulate a compelling vision for USCRG and explain its strategic initiatives, inspire confidence in donors, and assist with closing gifts.
The President of USCRG ensures that the organization operates in accordance with all USC policies and procedures and is in sound financial condition including a balanced budget, adequate reserves, and building endowment.
Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate:
Passion and knowledge of classical music.
Ten+ years of experience in a senior leadership role in public media, radio and/or a nonprofit arts organization with an understanding of music on digital and broadcast platforms.
Significant experience in strategic planning, budgeting and managing multiple priorities in a nonprofit setting.
Strong leadership experience and skills that include the ability to attract, hire, train, motivate, and retain talent.Â A demonstrated ability to lead others and achieve results in a team-oriented environment, while fostering belonging in a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.
Demonstrated experience as a transparent, empathetic and proactive communicator with staff, peers and subordinates.
