| The New York Youth Symphony (NYYS) is one of the most awarded youth programs of its kind in the nation, recognized for its innovative, educational programs for talented young musicians in the greater NYC area. The NYYS invites applications for the next Music Director of its award-winning Orchestra to begin in the 2023/24 season. Known for launching the careers of renowned conductors, including Leonard Slatkin, David Alan Miller, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and many more, the role is designed to assist the career development of conductors by providing a position which showcases the music director’s artistic vision and abilities through performances at Carnegie Hall, on international tours, and through virtual performances and recordings. Duties and Responsibilities: The Music Director oversees general artistic objectives; selects repertoire and soloists; directs the audition process, including recruitment; selects orchestra members; rehearses and conducts the orchestra; directs an orchestra staff of three; appoints an Assistant Conductor; coordinates and teaches in the Apprentice Conducting Program; and interacts with the administration, Trustees, parents, teachers, other music professionals, donors, and the public. The Music Director reports to the Board of Trustees and works closely with the Executive Director and administrative staff.
The new Music Director will begin their in-person role with auditions in September 2023. Season planning will occur in prior months with NYYS staff. The orchestra rehearses weekly on Sundays from 2-6pm at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music between September and May. The orchestra will perform at Carnegie Hall three times per year and performs community concerts prior to Carnegie. Touring, recording, and special projects occur as possible. |
