POSITION STATEMENT
Upper School Science Teacher Start Date: August 2022 Union Status: Union OVERVIEW A thriving PreK-12 grade school located in vibrant Downtown Brooklyn, BFS is a community of eager-to-learn and engaged students and highly committed and talented colleagues (BFS uses the all-inclusive term, colleagues, to refer to all rather than one that delineates faculty/staff). This short video gives you a glimpse into our contemporary experience. THE POSITION Brooklyn Friends School (BFS) seeks a passionate educator to teach US Science to students in grades 9-12. We seek candidates who are able to teach a combination of at least two out of three disciplines: Chemistry and Biology and/or Chemistry and Physics. Responsibilities of the position include teaching sections of IB High Level and Standard Level (11th and 12th grades) Chemistry, Biology, and/or Physics and a science elective. The position also includes the responsibility of being a student advisor within the Upper School’s advisory program. As the department’s needs change, according to the student population each year, other classes may be taught instead, or in combination. RESPONSIBILITIES - This position reports to the Head of Upper School in partnership with the Academic Leadership Team.
- Works in partnership and collaboration with division heads and colleagues to facilitate the needs and direction of the program.
- Be an active community member, sharing general support and care of the school community.
- Be an advisor of Upper School students, including overseeing their progress in all classes, being the primary contact with parents and other responsibilities as assigned.
- Practices shared leadership in the classroom with students and in the division with colleagues.
- Keeps abreast of, shares, and applies current research on teaching and learning.
- Teaches for understanding, using multiple modalities, especially experiential and/or project based learning.
- Engages parents through coffee hours and other as-needed conversations
- Examines and uses student learner profiles, in particular those for students with learning challenges, and teaches with an understanding of how to differentiate, accommodate, and modify in ways that benefit all students.
- Understands how to actively participate in Professional Learning Communities engaged in the growth of one’s practice.
- Demonstrates attention to detail while keeping an eye on departmental and whole-division vision.
REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES - Bachelor of Arts in the field or other area required.
- Master of Arts in the field or other area preferred.
- Professional dedication to progressive education, the division, and the whole school.
- Strong commitment to social justice, anti-bias education, and Quaker values.
- Ability to meet and adhere to multiple deadlines and strong organizational skills.
- Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication.
