GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The primary role of the interpreter is to serve as a facilitator of communication for faculty and staff members who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing colleagues, peers, students and other personnel on campus. The interpreter provides interpreting and support services for faculty members for classes, meetings and other university events in conjunction with Disability Services. This position also coordinates all interpreting/transliterating services for faculty and staff including but not limited to classes, meetings, events, theater rehearsals and performances and other campus activities. This position regularly exercises independent judgment within established procedures and interacts regularly with service providers, colleagues, and constituents, and must be able to provide exemplary service while exercising discretion and carefully maintaining confidentiality. This position will work the academic year and have 2 months off in the summer. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: - Directly provide in-person and remote interpreting services, both expressive and voice interpretation for faculty and staff members who are deaf or hard of hearing (classes, advising, departmental meetings, committee assignments, professional development, university meetings, and other events on campus).
- Interpret simultaneously with the presentation, classroom lectures, and/or other presentations and events from sign language to spoken English and responses from spoken English to sign language.
- Be proficient with remote conferencing platforms commonly used by FSU, Google Meet and Zoom.
- Assess communication access needs of requests and negotiate for optimum conditions to ensure effective services.
- Serve as a liaison between staff who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.
- Coordinate all interpreting/transliterating services for faculty and staff, including but not limited to securing a second interpreter and CART services when necessary.
- Adapt and integrate appropriate software and technology as options available for requested services.
- Interpret at special events such as graduations/commencements, student-instructor conferences, President’s Office or Academic Affairs sponsored events and extracurricular activities, etc. when requested in advance and availability permits.
- Maintain professionalism and professional standards delineated in the Code of Professional Conduct of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc and Interpreter Code of Ethics.
- Assist in onboarding freelance interpreters.
- Confer with fellow interpreters when working as a team, holding joint responsibility for the message.
- Assist in developing (and updating, as appropriate) forms and fact sheets regarding accommodations for individuals who are deaf/hard of hearing.
- Provide guidance and training for staff, faculty, and visitors regarding communication access.
- Assist with providing awareness and education to the campus community
- Obtain and review materials prior to providing interpreting services.
- Actively engage in reflective practice with colleagues to ensure best practices in ethical, linguistic, and cultural competencies
- Continue to stay current on deaf/hard of hearing topics and technology and use relevant knowledge for making decisions and solving problems.
- Code-switch between ASL and Signed English as directed by the Deaf individual, (staff or visitors) required.
