General DescriptionViolinist or Violist to serve as Associate-Chair Upper Strings of the Peabody Preparatory String Department and teach in the Suzuki/Rolland-based Young People's String Program (YPSP) and String Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. DUTIES: Teach violin and possibly viola in the Young People's String Program for beginners through Suzuki Book 7 and students through advanced levels in the String Department. Specific duties include:
Based on enrollment needs, there may also be the possibility of teaching YPSP Group Classes. Opportunity to teach students from the Tuned-In program. Training and mentoring on the Young People's String Program and Tuned-In program curriculum will be tailored to the candidate's experience. Minimum of 10 hours of combined teaching and administrative responsibilities. Administrative duties include - Attending string department meetings and Director's Council as needed - Communicating regularly with faculty, students, and families as needed - Holding orientation and placements (12 and up) interviews three times a year and monitoring lesson inquiries - Scheduling upper-strings studio classes and recitals - Scheduling upper-strings repertoire classes - Assisting Department Chair for Certificate Exam scheduling (upper strings) - Addressing teacher changes and faculty evaluations (depending on experience) - Giving input to the Department Chair regarding repertoire class and studio class hours for contracts. - Assisting Department Chair in gathering course information for the registration system and website. - Collaborating on the preparation of student/faculty String Packets - Organize and run one String Special Recital per year START DATE: July 1, 2022 LOCATION: The Peabody Preparatory shares space with the Peabody Conservatory in downtown Baltimore and offers strings at two satellite branches in the communities of Towson and Howard County, MD (St. John's Episcopal Church). The Preparatory is more than 100 years old and has approximately 2,000 students studying all instruments, dance, theory, early childhood, orchestra, etc. We embrace the novice as well as the serious student aspiring to a career in music. QualificationsBachelor's degree is required, Master's degree or equivalent experience is strongly preferred. Administrative experience and excellent communication skills are required. Must love and have experience teaching young children as well as having completed appropriate and relevant violin/viola pedagogy classes. Experience teaching Suzuki repertoire, familiarity with Paul Rolland's approach, and comfort in teaching repertoire outside of and beyond Suzuki books preferred. Awareness of the broad mission of the Preparatory and of the Tuned-In program, enacting social change through music. Violists must have experience teaching violin at the elementary and intermediate levels.
