Rider University seeks a Technical Director to support performance and production activities. This is a full-time, 12-month, non-bargaining administrative position that reports to the Director of Production Management. The position is open until filled, and the successful candidate will start at the earliest possible time.
The Technical Director is responsible for all physical aspects of theaters, including building sets, technical direction of productions, and recommending to the Director of Production Management purchases of supplies for set construction, lighting, sound, and props. The daily schedule varies and includes occasional extended hours, evenings and weekends, especially during technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals and all theater productions. This position has a direct impact on all production and performance programs on campus, providing a professional product to the campus as well as to the external community.
For each production, working with other full- and part-time staff, graduate assistants, and student workers, the Technical Director will consult with directors; draw up blue prints, sets, and renderings as needed, and collaborate with the Director of Production Management regarding purchase/rental of materials, etc. This position supervises scenic construction staff and students; props and paint staff as necessary; and ensures a safe and healthy working environment at all times. With the Directors of Production and Performance Management, this position coordinates the production and performance timetable. The Technical Director is expected to attend all technical rehearsals.
Coordinate theatre use for internal and external use
Collaborate with other Rider units including Public Safety, Facilities Management, and faculty and staff as appropriate
Recommend purchase of equipment and staffing needs to the Director of Production Management
In consultation with the Director of Production Management, purchase all necessary scenic materials and shop supplies
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate and provide evidence of professional and administrative abilities appropriate to this position. These include the ability to:
Track purchasing budgets for all scenic materials;
Coordinate production, labor, and materials budgets for the scenic aspect of each production
Maintain lighting and sound equipment, properties, shop, theaters, tools and equipment
Maintain the cleanliness and safety of the theaters and scene shops
Exhibit professional demeanor, calmness, and flexibility at all times
Work independently, and anticipate, organize, and prioritize work
Exercise good judgment, resolution skills, and strong decision-making to manage multiple projects
3 years experience as a Technical Director or 5 years experience as an Assistant T.D.
Technical knowledge in lighting, sound, carpentry, properties, rigging, scene painting, drafting
Strong organizational skills and excellent communication skills
Demonstrated ability to interpret designers' work
Ability to work independently and supervise staff and students
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to approach challenges collaboratively
Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail, maintaining a positive attitude in fast-paced and rapid-changing environments.
Knowledge of a variety of construction and rigging techniques; comfortable working in high spaces from ladders and aerial lifts
Able to safely lift 75 lbs.
Position Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
M.F.A. in Technical Direction and Production preferred
Design and drawing skills
Experience as a technical director in an academic setting
Experience working in higher education
Knowledge of a variety of construction and rigging techniques
Experience with automation and mechanical drive systems
