The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music invites applicants for one or more full-time faculty position(s) in Musical Theatre, Vocal Performance.Â The appointment is anticipated at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice. Â This is a full-time, non-tenure track (RTPC) appointment for an initial period of appointment of three years;Â it is renewable beyond the initial appointment period based the needs of the program.Â The appointment begins on August 16, 2022.

Housed in the School of Dramatic Arts, the BFA in Musical Theatre is a rigorous, cohort-based, conservatory-style undergraduate program featuring comprehensive training in acting, voice, dance, and dramaturgy. It offers students the opportunity for a transformative Â artistic journey as their foundational training is augmented by classes in the latest applications for musical theatre, including digital entrepreneurship and the on-screen musical.Â Taking advantage of the unparalleled resources and faculty of the schoolâs prestigious partner arts schools at USC, including the USC Thornton School of Music and the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, this degree offers singular opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and creativity.
The instructor(s) engaged for this/these position(s) will teach a mixture of individual instruction (in Contemporary and Classical Musical Theatre vocal styles and techniques) and performance-based courses.Â Additional duties may include instruction in vocal performance, song interpretation, pop/rock styles, audition preparation, and vocal workshops and ensembles.Â Participation in recruitment, pre-screening, auditions, and the selection process for musicals is expected.Â
Required qualifications: successful candidates will have a Bachelorâs Degree or equivalent experience as an established musical theatre practitioner with demonstrated professional success in musical theatre, expansive exposure to and networking within the musical theatre industry. They will be expected to have demonstrable experience contributing to a climate of inclusivity and working with a diverse range of stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students.
Eligible candidates should clearly express their understanding of the transition/passagio as it relates to male and female voices, and illuminate their philosophy of teaching in terms of breath management, placement, focus, and vowel modifications.
MM or MFA and/or national recognition as a vocal coach for musical theatre. A list of the candidateâs successful voice students is preferred, but not required. Piano proficiency is required to accommodate accompaniment during private voice instruction.
