Founded in 1933 and located in the coastal city of Santa Barbara, CA, Laguna Blanca School seeks a new Head of Lower School to begin July 1, 2022. Laguna Blanca enrolls 430 students across Early Kindergarten-Grade 12 and provides students with a rigorous yet supportive community that promotes deep learning while valuing life balance and well-being. The School occupies two campuses, with grades 5-12 on the 35-acre Hope Ranch Campus. Laguna Blanca’s Lower School is located in the village of Montecito and is intentionally designed for elementary aged students. Centered on the values of scholarship, character, balance, and community, learning in the Lower School is both engaging and transformative. The Lower School is in a very strong position with enrollment at capacity, a well-developed and respected program, and a faculty and staff who care deeply for the school, their work, and each other.
The Lower School serves 100 students in EK-Grade 4 in a closely knit and highly interpersonal environment. The Lower School aims to instill enthusiasm and respect for learning by providing a superior faculty, a challenging and well-conceived curriculum, and small classes. An emphasis on the development and mastery of skills in the traditional academic disciplines is enriched by the broad offering of special subjects including art, library, music, physical education, science, Spanish, and technology. Character education is central to the Lower School experience, where the aim is to have students grow to be responsible, caring, giving, joyful, and purposeful citizens by guiding and supporting their decision-making skills.
Because Laguna Blanca’s Lower School is on a campus separate from upper grades and most administrative functions, the Head of Lower School is afforded considerable autonomy in managing its operations. This necessitates an ability to multi-task effectively and to do so with a highly interactive approach in working with faculty, staff, students, and school families. Important responsibilities will include assuring the integration of the curriculum across specialist and homeroom classes, modeling healthy relationships with all constituents, and engaging deeply in admissions operations. The Head of Lower School reports directly to the Head of School and is a member of the senior administrative team.
