University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Practice in the Music Industry Program. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track position (RTPC) to begin August 15, 2022.Â The initial appointment is for three years, and is renewable.

The USC Thornton Music Industry program prepares students to succeed in a rapidly evolving industry that is largely rooted in the Los Angeles area. The program offers an unparalleled education, blending academics, practical knowledge and hands-on experience for those seeking a career in all facets of the music business, including: Â artist management, the record industry, music publishing, data and analytics decision making, live promotion and production and music supervision. Â The program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Industry, a Music Industry undergraduate minor, and a Master of Science degree in Music Industry.
An ideal candidate for this position is a seasoned professional with demonstrated success as a leader in all areas, with a solid understanding of and reputation in the music business community. Additionally, teaching experience in higher education, continuing education, or the executive environment is essential. This individual should be eager to continue learning and growing, while also imparting their knowledge and leadership skills upon students and colleagues.

Data and analytics pertaining to the music Industry
Technology disruptors and their relation to music
Intellectual property (Copyright and Trademark)
Songwriting & Composition
Music publishing & licensing
Record Producing and Record Production
Record label management (Major, Indie and/or DIY)
Record label and / or publishing- Artist and Repertoire
Music marketing (may include big business, consumer behavior, brand development, emerging/grassroots, social/streaming tools, etc.)
Podcasting (design and producing)
In addition, candidates should have excellent communication skills, be strong collaborators, and fully embrace the mission of the Thornton School Music. Furthermore, this individual should be an advocate for justice, equality, diversity and inclusion within and beyond the USC Thornton community.
Principal duties include teaching at the graduate and / or undergraduate level in courses that provide a comprehensive overview of the music industry to a variety of different audiences, especially introductory courses. Classes include, but are not limited to, introduction to the music industry, careers, rights and income streams, music publishing and licensing; music industry history regarding technology disruptors / music moguls; Diverse Beginnings: Exploring Diversity and Inclusion at the Core of the Music Industry; DIY record label; and entrepreneurship. Additional courses may also be assigned or substituted, dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.Â Topics include, but are not limited to, artist & repertoire, branding, music licensing, marketing & promotion, music production, songwriting & composing and podcasting. Mentoring of individual student capstone projects will be assigned as needed.
The selected candidate will also be expected to participate in recruiting and mentoring students, contributing to new course and program development, fostering relationships with music industry professionals and cultivating internship and career placements within the industry.
Finally, it is expected that all full-time faculty participate in the general governance of the Thornton School of Music and the University through periodic service on School of Music and/or University committees and liaising, connecting and advocating for the Thornton School externally with contemporary opinion makers and leaders in the music industry.
Minimum Qualifications and / or Experience: The ideal candidate will possess at least two (2) years of experience teaching at the collegiate or professional training level (online or in residence) in subject material related to music business or the music industry AND a Bachelorâs degree in music industry, business administration or related field AND at least five (5) years applicable music industry experience at a supervisorial level. The ideal candidate may substitute the Bachelorâs degree requirement with a minimum of ten (10) years of applicable music industry experience in the field at the managerial / supervisorial level.
Preferred qualifications and / or Experience:Masterâs degree requirement (MBA or Masters in Music Industry preferred) or a Juris Doctor, AND /OR a minimum of fifteen (15) years of applicable music industry experience in the field at the executive level; and at least three (3) years of experience teaching at the collegiate or professional training level (online or in residence) in subject material related to music business or the music industry.
This appointment is intended to draw upon a significant background in professional practice and is therefore not eligible for tenure. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience.Â Â Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Candidates with pedagogical focus related to equity and improving opportunities and outcomes for historically under-served groups are especially desired.Â
