The School of Visual, Performing, and Design Arts (SVPDA) in the Department of Graphic Design invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, instructor position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director.
This position is an integral contributor to the four-year BFA in Graphic Design Program at Oregon State University (OSU), which prepares students to take an influential role in shaping contemporary graphic design practice. Our philosophy is focused on the 'action of design' — how design transforms, translates and communicates. Our students graduate with the ability to generate and execute ideas/innovations with intended actions. This designed intention centers on effective audience communication and delivery across a multitude of user-interfaces that form a necessary and expected part of living in today's world.
By embracing art, design, technology, and purpose — the Graphic Design program incorporates the belief that art and design can make real change. SVPDA seeks creative scholars with active, and/or work experience to inspire this kind of change and build a tradition of excellence.
Graphic Design students may also take courses in Art (painting, drawing, printmaking, 3D/sculpture, photography, video, and art history). Students have the opportunity to interact with guests from the outstanding Visiting Artists and Scholars lecture series. Fairbanks art galleries (currently, along with the rest of the building, being fully remodeled) hosts regional and national artist exhibitions. Students in Graphic Design learn in small classes taught by professional faculty.
The SVPDA includes programs in Art, Graphic Design, Music, and Theatre. SVPDA is one of seven schools in OSU's College of Liberal Arts (CLA). Founded in 1868, OSU is the state's Land Grant university and is one of only two universities in the U.S. to have Sea Grant, Space Grant and Sun Grant designations. Oregon State is also the only university in Oregon to hold both the Carnegie Foundation's top designation for research institutions and its prestigious Community Engagement classification. Oregon State University's commitment to student success includes hiring, retaining, and developing diverse faculty to mentor and educate our undergraduate and graduate students from entry through graduation. Our Strategic Plan (http://oregonstate.edu/leadership/strategicplan/phase3)articulates the strategies we believe critical to advancing and equalizing student success.
SVPDA is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and who have a demonstrated commitment to student success and to improving access to higher education for disadvantaged students.
