Davidson College is requiring new employees hired into jobs posted after August 1, 2021, and all employees with a start date on or later than September 1, 2021, to be vaccinated to help protect the health and safety of our community. Davidson College invites applications for a Visiting Artist Associate who will serve as Director of Jazz Activities for the 2022-2023 year, to begin July 1, 2022. This is a half-time, non-tenure-track appointment, with the possibility for renewal.
Conducting the Jazz Ensemble in rehearsals and concerts. The 18-piece ensemble rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:15 p.m. and performs 1-2 full concerts and a half-concert on the Davidson Town Green each semester.
Directing the Jazz Combos in rehearsals and concerts. Typically there are 2-3 combos with 4-7 players, depending on instrumentation. Each combo receives an hour of coaching each week. Typically, the combos present one concert each semester.
Coordinate a tour that normally takes place in early January.
Booking guest artists to perform with the Jazz Ensemble. The budget includes funds to contract one or two guest artists each season. Guest artists are typically in residence for 2-3 days, rehearsing with the Jazz Ensemble and giving master classes.
Recruiting student musicians, in coordination with the Admissions and Music Departments. Recruiting primarily involves communication with applicants and prospective applicants through email and Zoom, and does not require travel.
Master’s degree in music with an emphasis in jazz, or closely related field, required; demonstrated success directing a jazz ensemble. Review of applications begins November 1, 2021; open until filled.
