The Director is responsible for the MSU Community Music School-Detroit (CMS-D) strategic vision and its implementation, in coordination with the MSU College of Music and MSU values, goals and objectives. The Director oversees programming, operations, financial planning, fundraising, marketing, and community relations. The director ensures CMS-D compliance with MSU policies and procedures including human resources, youth safety and audit practices. The Director serves as the organization’s public face and seeks to build broad community support for CMS-D’s music education mission. The Director facilitates strategic community partnerships with the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD). The Director seeks and supports diverse collaborations with the College of Music faculty, and other MSU colleges and units, to deepen connections and create mutually beneficial relationships in service of the Detroit community. The Director reports to the Dean of the MSU College of Music and supervises the Assistant Director. The Director provides leadership for the CMS-D team, establishing a collaborative, innovative, high functioning, and effective learning and working environment.
Specific duties include:
Creates and maintains strategic planning documents, including annual budget
Cultivates Advisory Board and seeks broad community input on programming
Grows support base for CMS-D programs and activities with community leaders
Seeks opportunities to grow earned and contributed income
Explores new and creative programming that responds to the needs of the community
Ensures survey data captured for strategic program evaluation
Invites university collaboration to achieve program research
Provides leadership for long-term facilities needs
Finances & Budget
Directs budget including revenue and expense goals,
Coordinates with shared CMS financial officer and College of Music Director of Finance
Works with CMS financial officer to develop financial reports for strategic analysis
Reviews monthly cash flow projections
Directs financial aid policies
Directs annual fundraising activities in collaboration with College of Music development officers,
CMS East Lansing support staff, and MSU University Advancement
Manages annual development calendar and grant/reporting deadlines
Writes grants and identifies new grant opportunities
Develops and cultivates donor base including individuals, corporations, and foundations
With College of Music Sr. Director of Development, directs donor recognition strategy and produces development materials
Leads special event fundraising, Parade, Day of Giving, etc.
Marketing and Communications
With College of Music Marketing team provides leadership for the marketing and communications plan for optimum organizational visibility
Provides guidance and oversight for target enrollments and earned income metrics
Writes and produces annual reports, newsletters, etc.
Guides production of brochures, posters, flyers, other materials
Provide guidance and oversight for accuracy of website and compliance with MSU web brand standards.
Provides guidance and oversight of photography and audio-visual needs scheduled by Assistant Director
Leads social media campaigns
Directs publicity activities including CMS-D and educational concerts
Provides supervision to the Assistant Director
Ensures clear and effective communication through regular staff meetings
Provides support to faculty as needed; helps recruit talented faculty
Works with the College of Music HR Director and staff to ensure compliance with University, State and Federal hiring and payroll guidelines.
Attends College of Music and MSU meetings and training.
Supports and facilitates regular staff training and educational opportunities
Fosters a culture of collaboration between faculty and staff
Guides customer service policies
Promotes an environment of excellence and hospitality
