Position Title: Director, Sing! (Full Time) Department: Artistic Operations Location: Santa Barbara, CA Status: Full-time, Exempt
Position Summary: The Music Academy of the West is committed to serving the youth of Santa Barbara with the highest level of excellence in choral instruction and music education through its Sing! program, now in its third year. The Academy is partnering with the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (Francisco Nuñez, founder) to plan the growth and efficacy of the Sing! program. The Director of Sing! will provide vision and administrative support for the growth of the program to all areas of Santa Barbara County and will oversee the YPC partnership. The Director of Sing! will supervise the part-time choral directors and will be the direct liaison with the Santa Barbara Unified School district, principals, and Academy board.
Position Responsibilities: • Serve as Choral Director for the Sing! Program teaching 10-15 hours per week in local schools, but may increase as the program grows. • Supervise two current part-time choral directors and oversee hiring of new choral directors as needed. • Provide leadership and oversight of the Sing! program with an eye towards its expansion and its maximum impact for the Santa Barbara community, and as a model to be used by other communities. • Develop and nurture contacts with the school system and individuals in Santa Barbara that will ensure that the Academy will advance its goals of serving children and the community. • Create strategies for integrating the Sing! program into the Summer Festival and create performance opportunities for the Sing! children. • Work with YPC National to ensure a successful collaboration that fully integrates the mission of Sing! at the Academy with the input from YPC. • Manage the YPC Summer LAB program in summer 2022, which will include 100-150 local Sing! children, and 70 YPC National choristers, and which is an educational and mentoring program for youth choral Directors.

The ideal candidate will ideally demonstrate some, if not all: • Proven experience as a children’s choral director • A passion for classical music or other performing arts and a demonstrated commitment to non-profit arts organizations • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities and multiple stakeholders, including local school systems • Creativity in program development • Proven ability in program design and implementation • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills • Ability to work on a team collaboratively with minimal supervision and adapt to changing work priorities and schedules • At least seven years of professional involvement in classical music, as either an artist or administrator • Commitment to: o Investing in the professional growth of young artists and the cultivation of new audiences o Extending the brand of the Music Academy of the West as a thought leader and change maker in classical music both nationally and internationally Benefits and Compensation: This is an exempt, full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience.
