Faculty Duties: Contribute to curriculum in the area of the candidate’s area of expertise, including, but not limited to: expertise in directing, acting, designing or managing stage productions (including new works), or other areas of specialization, including dramaturgy, community engagement, practice as research, or production; demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence; create an innovative curriculum for a broad range of students of varied identities and backgrounds who seek to explore a range of educational opportunities and career pathways; recruit and retain students of exceptional promise; and develop and maintain a visible national and international profile as a theatre artist and teacher. The appointee will also be expected to participate in faculty governance, attend faculty meetings and serve on faculty and University committees as appropriate.
Chair Duties: Lead the Department of Theatre & Drama (a department with multiple undergraduate degree programs of 280 students and 22 faculty) for an initial 3 to 5 year appointment and provide overall supervision of the department and its administration. Advocate for the department; serve as administrative head of the department with oversight of faculty (including faculty teaching assignments), staff, curriculum, budget, and strategic direction; represent the department in outreach and engagement activities; oversee department recruitment; exercise artistic leadership over season selection and productions, provide visionary and inspiring leadership, articulate and enact a vision infusing anti-racism and social justice as a fundamental value of theatre practice, scholarship, and community engagement, with equal weight given to teaching the craft of theatre, and engage in interdisciplinary initiatives and collaborations across campus.
Other duties: It is anticipated that the new Chair will facilitate a multi-year hiring initiative, the key component of which should be to promote diversity and inclusion and academic excellence across departmental areas. As the public face of the Department of Theatre & Drama, serve as host at many performances, special events and throughout the admissions process, and cultivate and sustain a relationship with the Friends of Theatre donors, in collaboration with the SMTD Office of Advancement.
Salary range is $90,000 - $120,000; salary commensurate with experience, higher salary may be considered for exceptional candidate.
Academic, administrative and professional experience, with significant achievement in at least two of those areas. Expertise in pedagogy, creative work, scholarship, service, and/or other activities.Demonstrated ability to empower, advocate for, and value a broad range of students of diverse identities and experiences, as shown through pedagogy, mentoring, and related activities. Demonstrated expertise and experience in teaching by having presented master classes, workshops, maintained private coaching studios, and/or served as a faculty member at institution(s) of higher learning. Experience in fundraising and development and the ability to grow related networks and productively interact with prospective students, parents, donors, audiences and industry professionals.The ability to write, communicate and organize effectively. Terminal degree or commensurate professional experience required.
