![]() IP OFCR 4 (Intellectual Property Officer) Department Description The Chancellor has delegated authority for all intellectual property matters to InnovationAccess. Due to the breadth of technology, and science, academic and creative activities at UC Davis and other intellectual property-related duties, the management of copyrights are performed by a high level independent contributor with a specialty in this area. Moreover, the increasing importance of data protection and large data sets, use in the university environment and licensing requires a future-thinking problem-solver who can ascertain and evaluate emerging best practices such that UCD can lead its stakeholders, the UC, and the region. Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, this position is responsible for oversight of and managing the campus's copyright program. Activities include extensive education and outreach, advising on legal and business aspects of copyright-related activities, and drafting and negotiating legal agreements with a variety of other entities including non- and for profit researchers and educational institutions. Collaborates with colleagues at UCOP and other campuses on issues and policies important to higher education. Provides general guidance relating to university policy on other areas of intellectual property. POSITION INFORMATION PHYSICAL DEMANDS Sit and work for extended periods of time at a computer. WORK ENVIRONMENT Provide own transportation to off-site events and meetings. Work overtime including evenings and weekends and/or holidays to meet business needs. Occasional overnight travel is required. UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. QUALIFICATIONS Required: -Four years of advanced experience independently negotiating, drafting, supervising and managing a significant number of complex intellectual property agreements, with emphasis on copyright, data, software, privacy, and confidentiality issues. -At least three years of experience in higher education administrative and academic policies and procedures related to general contracting and intellectual property. -Experience managing multiple simultaneous complex projects with competing demands while maintaining productivity, Knowledge of the Internet, online tools, databases, machine learning, artificial intelligence, software, and digital media platforms sufficient to understand their evolving use in higher education environments. -Knowledge of print, software, music, television, and/or video industries related to production and distribution of such materials. -Communication and interpersonal skills to interact, negotiate and/or collaborate with high-level executives, administrators, faculty and members of the public from a wide range of functional areas, backgrounds and organizational levels. -Skills and knowledge to work with authors, artists, private sector, commercial and nonprofit companies and their interests and business models. -Skills and knowledge to provide leadership to and manage a functional program in copyrights Preferred: -Skills to communicate legal and technical information to non-technical people, providing educational outreach in a variety of methods both formally and informally. -Experience communicating legal and technical information to non-technical people, providing educational outreach in a variety of methods both formally and informally. -Experience with Internet and other digital media as used in higher education environments relating to software and websites. -Experience with print, software, music, television, and/or video industries related to production and distribution of such materials. -Experience interacting, negotiating and/or collaborating with high-level executives, administrators, faculty and members of the public from a wide range of functional areas, backgrounds and organizational levels. -Experience working with authors, artists, private sector, commercial and nonprofit companies and their interests and business models. -Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or demonstrated equivalent competencies based on employment history SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Background Check This position is a critical position and subject to a background check.
