Overview Celebrity Series of Boston (CSB) seeks a Director of Marketing and Communications to provide leadership, strategic direction, and overall management for the daily operations of the marketing and communications efforts of the organization. The Director is responsible for maintaining and growing the CBS audience through the design, measurement and management of the marketing, communication, graphic design, ticketing, and revenue strategy, and oversees box office functions. They have experience in managerial and leadership roles, including work in core functional areas of marketing and communications. They embrace the quickly evolving role of digital media, as both a marketing vehicle and as a platform for delivering artistic content to existing and potential audiences. They think nimbly and are adaptable, as the return to live, in-person concerts (anticipated in late 2021) will require a marketing and sales effort unlike previous seasons. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director is a key member of the senior management team (Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Advancement Officer, and Artistic Programmer), and will develop strategies, allocate staff resources, and employ technology to advance CSB’s mission consistent with the organization’s strategic plan, goals, and values. Primary Responsibilities Marketing - Oversees activities to engage current and prospective audience members in the sale of tickets to CSB’s performances and is responsible for annual performance revenue goals (approx. $4-$4.5 million in pre-COVID times.)
- Works with senior management team to develop a long term strategic digital strategy, including live streaming of both paid and free in-person performances.
- Develops and monitors annual department budgets and operating plans.
- Works with COO, Executive Director, and Artistic Programmer to develop and implement a strategic acquisition strategy to ensure new audience growth across various segments.
- Implements audience engagement policies and related communications that are consistent with the organization’s values in equity and inclusion.
- Supervises department staff, including marketing/communications/design/box office personnel (8 full-time, 2-5 part-time and contract workers); provides leadership, direction, and motivation to achieve annual marketing and organizational goals.
- Ensures retention and analyses of audience data to help achieve organizational goals.
- With box office staff, develops revenue strategies, including ticket pricing, sales promotions, discount strategies and dynamic pricing to maximize performance revenue.
- Ensures department is proficient with Tessitura CRM system, is up to date with related upgrades and applications, and seeks out organizational efficiency and collaboration.
- Manages departmental expense budget to ensure sound financial controls.
- Ensures CSB’s branding and related graphic design are implemented consistently across all media; oversees all outsourced and in-house materials, including collateral, direct mail, and all forms of online communications.
- Manages third party vendors, such as Capacity Interactive, TRG, and Tessitura’s business consulting division, to enhance revenue and increase expense efficiencies.
- Oversees at-venue institutional messaging and branding materials.
Communications - Oversees public relations and publicity efforts to ensure consistent message and develop adequate knowledge and awareness of Celebrity Series mission, programs and performances among stakeholders, audience members and the public in general.
- Collaborates with Advancement department to ensure consistent and strategic flow of information and institutional messaging to existing stakeholder, donor, audience, and potential audience households.
- Oversees external communication strategy that represents organization’s values in equity and inclusion.
- Supports community engagement and public performance projects (strategy, branding, public engagement, and any recruitment efforts, in concert with external project teams).
Ongoing Responsibilities - Working with the Executive Director and senior management team, ensures that internal and external communications reflect the mission and tone of the organization and are employed effectively to help achieve the organization’s strategic goals.
- As member of the senior management team, works collaboratively with all departments to ensure that strategic programmatic, institutional, and financial objectives are met.
- Acts as representative authority of the organization as necessary (at performances, community events, industry convenings, fundraising events, volunteer events, etc.).
- Fosters a sense of collaboration and shared purpose across all departments, and particularly, between Marketing/Communications and Advancement.
- Provides staff development, gives constructive criticism, and rewards achievement.
- Embraces and constantly assesses CSB’s commitment to be an anti-racist organization.
- Attends relevant meetings of the Board of Directors and various board committees and serves as staff liaison to the Marketing Committee.
- Cultivates positive relationships with existing and new organizational partners.
- Represents CSB’s values, code of conduct, and creates a positive, respectful experience for others.
Work Environment Celebrity Series offices are located at 20 Park Plaza, Suite 1032, Boston, MA. All work is currently being conducted remotely and will continue until at least June 30, 2021. Remote work is expected to remain a partial component of the work environment. Salary & Benefits Salary is competitive in the arts and culture sector, and dependent upon experience.
