HS2 Summer Program- Writing
HS2 High School High Scholar Summer Program
The High School High Scholar [HS]2 program at Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) is a three-summer scholarship program that prepares students for college, with an emphasis on courses in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and college counseling. During five weeks each summer, [HS]2 scholars live and learn on the CRMS campus in Carbondale, Colorado. On weekdays, students attend six hours of academic classes. In the afternoons, they participate in the Active Program, which includes rock climbing, kayaking, and team sports, as well as art classes such as silversmithing, fused glass, and music. On weekends, the natural environment surrounding campus inspires exploration. This unique combination of challenging academics and outdoor activities contributes to the intellectual, social, and emotional growth of each [HS]2 scholar, while the boarding experience fosters independence and responsibility. The 2021 [HS]2 program runs June 21 to July 24, with faculty and RA/TAs arriving on campus Wednesday, June 16, and departing between July 24-26. The High School High Scholar [HS]2 program at Colorado Rocky Mountain School is currently hiring English teachers for the following positions for the 2021 five-week summer session:
Each section of writing will be taught for two hours per day, M-F for a total of 10 hours per week if teaching one section (approximately 50 hours over the course of the summer). [HS]2's Writing 2 course offers students a variety of diverse authors and works through a multi-media approach and curriculum while providing the time and space for learners to reflect on these narratives and to craft their own pieces concerning their relationships to the themes and discussions at hand. The course focuses on modern American Literature and the wide array of stories and perspectives that comprise this unique literary tradition. Throughout the course, students will examine and wrestle with the relationship that these authors have with their respective identities and relationships to America at large. The Writing 2 instructor will be responsible for organizing an end of summer showcase, where students within the course will write, and ultimately read aloud a personal narrative from their own experiences, to be shared with the entire HS2 community. Responsibilities also include tutoring students during study hall three evenings per week from 7:00-9:00 pm, and chaperoning one on-campus social event and one off-campus trip during the session. Teachers do not have dormitory responsibilities. Established in 2007, High School High Scholar [HS]2 is a rigorous STEM-based summer enrichment program at Colorado Rocky Mountain School that supports first-generation and/or low-income minority students and prepares them to succeed in college by empowering them with STEM-based skills, a family of driven peers, and a space to see the light and power in their own voices.
