JOB SUMMARY: The Middle School performing arts teacher designs and delivers a creative, student-centered, and inquiry-driven curriculum for grades 6-8, culminating in student-created original and adapted plays as larger ensembles with full production at every grade level. In addition to performance-specific skills, the teacher will guide students in their exploration of foundational technical theater skills including stage design, costuming, lighting, sound design and digital tools to create and enhance an intentional performance context. This individual teaches courses at each grade level of approximately 18-20 students. Other faculty responsibilities include being an advisor to a small group of students and occasional supervisory and chaperoning duties. The teacher is expected to be skilled in facilitating project-based learning guiding students to learn through inquiry and discovery.

Facilitate dynamic, engaging, and effective learning experiences for acting classes in grades 6-8th on a rotating schedule.
Offer opportunities for students to create and perform original student productions in addition to experience with and exposure to existing and established performances.
Encourage and foster an appreciation for a diversity of texts and perspectives to build empathy and understanding of diverse characters and stories.
Engage fully in inclusive curriculum development activities.
Create a balance between individual and collaborative student work.
Partner with the Middle School faculty and the Visual, Performing, and Musical Arts (VAPA) Department to create and adhere to best practices on thoughtfully guiding students throughout their learning process.
Make learning visible with opportunities for critique, feedback, and reflection processes with diverse approaches.
Manage the classroom environment so that all students can learn safely and feel included.
Establish and maintain appropriate standards for student behavior using Restorative Practice methods which encourage reflection and problem solving and support positive self-esteem and building relationships.
Develop curriculum with clear learning outcomes, assessments, and means for feedback using a proficiency grading scale.
Teach classes remotely as circumstances dictate.
Communicate with students and parents in a clear, timely, and professional manner.
Advise a group of Middle School students and attend two overnight grade level trips.
Engage in professional growth and development activities including the School’s DEI programming.
Attend Middle School meetings, Grade-level Team meetings, and VAPA Department meetings.
Serve as a role model for Middle School students.
BA/BS or equivalent in relevant discipline
Three years of experience teaching at the secondary level; managing and directing student performances
Intercultural competence, ability to interact appropriately with a diverse array of students, coworkers, family members; ability to teach diverse groups of students effectively, commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
IT skills: general digital literacy, digital intermediate to advanced MS Office Suite, database skills, web applications including Google Docs, Zoom or Meet, etc.
Ability to pass a background check and drug screen
MA/MS in relevant discipline
Experience teaching in an independent school setting
Performance and technical theater skill set
Collaborative, public-facing, inquiry-based performing arts project creation and management
Devising techniques and experimental theater processes
Film making, audio, and video recording and production skills
Arts integration experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to develop curriculum with consideration of scope and sequence, proficiency scale grading, and thoughtful curriculum goals and assessments.
Ability to maintain a flexible mindset and an innovative approach to teaching
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate and maintain collegial relations with colleagues
Knowledge of educational technology; openness to innovation, willingness to learn, ability to integrate evolving IT into curriculum
Primarily classroom environment, ability to sit at a computer and keyboard for moderate periods
Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds on an occasional basis
Must be able to see, hear, and speak clearly to interact with groups of individuals
Ability to move about the OES campus
COMPENSATION: Faculty salary scale based on education and years’ teaching experience.
