The mission of the Renaissance Academy Charter School of the Arts (RA) is to provide children an enriched and rigorous education through humanities and arts integration that leads to success in college, careers, and life. Established in 2014, Renaissance Academy Charter School of the Arts (RA) is one of two public elementary schools of the arts in New York State. RA is a K-6 school with 525 students, who are bussed from throughout Monroe County with 90% of students residing in Rochester, 92% eligible for free or reduced lunch, and 13% of students qualifying for special education support.
RA’s arts infused curriculum is based on research indicating that integrating the arts into education increases engagement and motivation, promotes active involvement in learning by deepening students' academic knowledge, while at the same time developing creative expression. RA also supports the development of character strengths, focuses on building language, numeracy and math skills, offers two therapy dogs for animal-assisted interventions in small groups and for students experiencing trauma and/or emotional crises, and provides extensive support for families.
RA is seeking an effective communicator, skilled manager, and enthusiastic champion of the school’s mission to join the community as the next Chief Education Officer and lead the school into its next phase of growth. They will be responsible for supervising finance and operations, managing the school’s senior academic leadership, interfacing with the board and broader RA education community, and ensuring that the school’s vision and mission are living through its work with students every day. They will be a passionate advocate for RA’s work on behalf of its students and will maintain a thriving K-6th grade program that ensures a high level of academic rigor for all students, marrying that intent with a focus on both arts integration, cultural competence, and the social-emotional needs of the school community.
The ideal Chief Education Officer candidate will believe deeply in RA’s core value of arts integration and rigorous instruction for all students. They will be strong in external relations with connections in the local and national education community. This person will ideally have some experience with and/or exposure to arts integration best practices. They will understand the needs of elementary students and be an enthusiastic builder of school culture and traditions. Any qualified Chief Education Officer candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion with meaningful examples of how they have led with these values in their previous work with team members and colleagues.
Key Responsibilities of the Chief Education Officer include:
Leading the vision for RA’s success, including ensuring that its delivery of the K-6th grade curriculum, arts integration, community engagement, and external partnerships are highly effective and tightly aligned to the school’s mission and goals;
Managing the principal, assistant principal and other senior staff by acting not only as a supervisor but also as a coach and consensus builder and by remaining deeply committed to developing and bringing out the strengths of all of RA’s people while holding them accountable for their goals and desired student outcomes;
Partnering with the Board of Directors and funders to secure and allocate the resources and supports necessary to maintain the health of the school, remaining solutions-oriented while pushing the boundaries of what is possible to realize the highest levels of success for RA’s youth and their community;
Ensuring long-term viability through prudent and attentive management to maintaining financial liability, facilities, upholding compliance with state charter requirements and overseeing seamless school operations;
Ensuring that the organization's core values are lived, embraced, and strengthened by all stakeholders, and that the work of teachers and staff is purposeful and meaningful towards student outcomes;
Inspiring students, faculty, staff and other partners to be their best selves every day, always keeping the community’s moral and ethical compass pointing in the right direction and ensuring an unyielding focus at all times on what is best for RA’s students and their futures;
Partnering with students’ families and their needs to provide the most nurturing environment to help children grow into their fullest potential so that they can pursue lives full of meaning and joy, and to build connection with families across lines of difference, to create a welcoming and inclusive community for all, ensure participation and engagement, and to strengthen the lines of communication;
Overseeing initiatives for recruitment to ensure a diverse population including increased numbers of English Language Learners and students with special needs.
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Chief Education Officer candidate will be:
An accomplished leader with a minimum of 10 years professional experience and demonstrated success as a school-based administrator in a setting that ensures outstanding outcomes for the children/youth they serve. Preference for a leader with experience or exposure to arts integration.
Inspiring in their management style, with experience leading leaders, willing to devote time to coach and develop colleagues while holding them accountable to measurable results.
Experienced in overseeing a complex organization, knowledgeable about best practices around school growth and programmatic expansion, and able to manage organizational change effectively.
A self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, gender identity and other issues of difference in our society and has personally worked in similar communities to ensure all students have an opportunity to achieve their personal dreams of college and career success.
Knowledgeable about the academic and social-emotional needs of elementary students as they pursue their paths towards college and career; experience working directly with K-6th grade students is preferred.
Able to ensure the financial health and sustainability of RA’s programs through developing strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, raising public and private dollars as needed.
Dynamic and versatile, able to engage a variety of individuals in dialogue and speak in a clear, compelling and authentic manner about the organization’s goals and priorities.
