The Department of Art at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor and Area Head of Visual Foundations. The successful candidate must be able to develop Visual Foundations curriculum and teach both in Visual Foundations and in another area within the department: Graphic Design, Digital Media, Drawing, Painting, Photo/Video, Printmaking, or Sculpture. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate their interest and experience in working with diverse student populations.
Tenure-track faculty will be expected to maintain teaching load; engage in active research/creative practices; contribute to the interdisciplinary BFA and MFA fine arts programs by serving on committees and teaching seminars; and participate in service to both the department and the university. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021.
The Department of Art seeks an individual with strong experience in visual foundations mixing traditional tools with digital applications. The ideal candidate will have an excellent background in teaching and in recent pedagogical advancements in the area. Experience in the latest theory and practice is highly desirable, as is participation in organizations or conferences in the field. The individual would work closely with existing faculty in all areas to assess and develop visual foundations courses that support and connect to the unique and varied curriculum being taught in the Department of Art.
The position of Area Head involves managing facilities and equipment in the classroom space, ordering supplies, and maintaining instructors for the numerous course sections offered each semester and during summer sessions, and building curriculum as needed.

MFA in Studio Art from a nationally accredited institution
2 years teaching experience at the college level beyond graduate teaching assistantships
Teaching experience in visual foundations and one other area of expertise
Active and promising record of excellence in research/creative activity including national and/or international exhibitions
Experience working with diverse and underrepresented populations
Participation in organizations/conferences dealing in theory and pedagogy surrounding teaching foundations courses
Demonstration of course and curriculum development
The UNR Department of Art offers multiple areas of emphasis for students including art history, book & publication arts, ceramics, digital media, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography and videography, printmaking, and sculpture. Students may work in a specific area of specialization or explore a range of practices in a variety of media in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Master of Fine Arts degree programs.
The Department of Art is one of three academic units within the School of the Arts, housed in the College of Liberal Arts. The departments of Art, Music, and Theatre and Dance enroll more than 4,000 students from diverse backgrounds in arts courses each semester; we believe that artistic exploration is integral to a liberal arts education. Talented students and faculty from each department engage in scholarship and creative activity that are showcased to the community on our beautiful stages, concert halls, and visual arts venues.
