As the school completes its sixteenth year of operation, the school’s Executive Director, Kathy Egmont is stepping down after leading the school through a series of critical milestones including: the creation of a strategic plan; developing new and exciting HR policies to further teacher and staff retention; professional development; as well as seamlessly transitioning the school to remote learning last spring at the start of the global pandemic. The organization is thus seeking an experienced executive to lead it into its next chapter of growth and success. This new Executive Director will be responsible for the organization’s success in meeting its instructional, school culture, operations, fundraising, external relations and financial management goals. The Executive Director will play a critical role in driving the long-term strategic growth plan for SACS with an emphasis on growth planning, Diversity Equity and Inclusion work as well as considerations regarding the schools long-term physical space requirements. The Executive Director will partner with the Board of Trustee and hold the primary responsibility of overseeing business operations for SACS. S/he will serve as an external ambassador and champion for the school with key strategic audiences including philanthropic partners, state chartering authorities, the City of Salem, the Salem school district, and the the surrounding community and other partners.
The ideal Executive Director will demonstrate exceptional relationship management and communication skills with a diverse group of audiences (parents, staff, students, district officials and community partners) while also maintaining a strong school culture that embodies the school’s REACH (responsible, empathetic, assertive, cooperative and honest) norms for both students and staff. As a culturally competent and a self-reflective leader, the Executive Director will understand the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, and other issues of difference in our society, and ensure that all Salem Academy students have an opportunity to achieve their dreams of college and career success. Adept at finance and school operations, decision-making, and embracing a high level of accountability, the Executive Director will hold a deep belief in the charter school movement and a roll-up your sleeves attitude reflective of the culture at Salem Academy.
Key Responsibilities of the Executive Director include:
Leading the vision for Salem Academy Charter Schools’ success, including ensuring that school operations, facilities, the instructional program, school culture and climate, community engagement, and external partnerships are highly effective and tightly aligned to the school mission and goals;
Managing senior staff, acting not only as a supervisor, but also as a coach and consensus builder, remaining deeply committed to the school’s commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as the values of developing and bringing out the strengths of all of Salem Academy’s people, while also holding them accountable for their goals and desired outcomes for the whole community;
Partnering with the Board of Directors and funders to secure and allocate the resources and supports necessary to maintain and grow the health of the organization, remaining solutions-oriented and grounded in reality as needed while pushing the boundaries of what is possible to realize the highest levels of success for all students and their families;
Ensuring long-term viability through prudent and attentive management to maintaining financial liability, facilities, upholding compliance with state charter requirements and overseeing seamless school operations;
Inspiring students, faculty, families, and other partners to be their best selves every day, always keeping the community’s moral compass pointing in the right direction, and ensuring an unyielding focus at all times on what is best for Salem Academy’s scholars, their families and community, and their futures.
A successful first year in this role for the new Executive Director will include:
Cultivating strong relationships with staff and families by maintaining a high level of accessibility and regular communication with key stakeholders;
Ensuring the school maintains a highly rigorous, project-based curriculum for students in grades 6-12;
Building and maintaining a culture where all stakeholders feel a sense of belonging and inclusion through a school wide emphasis on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, and regular communication with students and families;
Enrolling and supporting a diverse range of students and families in their academic and social-emotional growth;
Ensuring the long-term financial sustainability for Salem Academy through sound fiscal and operational oversight and engagement in ongoing fundraising and development efforts as well as the pursuit of long-term facilities options.
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Executive Director candidate will be:
An accomplished leader with at least 10-15 years of experience in education reform, preferably in a charter school environment, with a minimum of 5-7 years of demonstrated success as a school-based administrator, non-profit executive and/or senior manager in a variety of settings;
Exceptional people management skills, with direct experience supervising a team of at least five staff and proven ability to manage teams toward exceptional performance;
Strong talent development skill-set with a track record of providing frequent real-time feedback, coaching and support to direct reports;
Strategic mindset with the ability to delegate and leverage resources wisely, prioritize and re-prioritize on an ongoing basis, and adapt these plans on an as-needed basis as crises and unexpected circumstances arise;
Ability to forge strong partnerships and relationships with both internal and external stakeholders including Boards of Directors, Philanthropic partners, school district officials, parents and students;
Superior written, verbal and presentation communication skills with the ability read audiences, adapt communication styles as appropriate, and resonate with different audiences;
Demonstrated success in compelling institutions and individuals to invest in a particular vision;
Exceptional organizational skills with proven systems for managing all aspects of professional life and ability to customize and craft relevant organizational strategies in multiple contexts;
Proven propensity to roll-up their sleeves and problem solve through operational and logistical challenges as needed;
Energizing and motivational personality with proven ability to inspire and engage others toward action;
Conversational or fluent Spanish language skills are highly preferred.
