Assistant Professor of Sound Design in Technical Theatre

The Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, seeks a creative theatre artist to teach and mentor student Sound Designers in its B.A. and M.F.A. Design and Technology programs. The Department’s core goals are to establish and nurture a creative, intellectual, inclusive and interdisciplinary environment that facilitates innovation, exploration, and refinement in dance and theatre arts, embraces the challenges and opportunities presented by the diversity of the ever-changing society in which we live, and fosters a spirit of collaboration and exchange among University students, faculty, personnel, and with the Minnesota and world communities beyond. The department is a member of the University / Resident Theater Association and is committed to academic excellence in the context of professional training. Appointment will be 100% time over the nine-month academic year (late-August to late-May). Appointment will be at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor, depending on qualifications and experience, and consistent with collegiate and University policy. Faculty in the College of Liberal Arts are expected to maintain an active program of scholarly research or other creative work that includes publication, exhibition, or performance; develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses; advise students regarding coursework and broader academic goals; provide service and governance contributions appropriate for the rank of the appointment to the department, college, University, and profession; and contribute to outreach activities that support the University’s mission. The successful candidate will be an established, professional theatre artist with a demonstrated passion for teaching. A BA or BFA degree in Technical Theatre; two years of college level teaching; and three years of professional sound design experience are required. An MFA in Technical Theatre is preferred with at least five years of professional work experience. Duties and responsibilities include the supervision of student designers, both graduate and undergraduate, in the creation and execution of sound designs for our main stage and studio series productions and creative collaborations. Teaching assignments will be determined by programmatic needs and the candidate’s particular area(s) of expertise; they will include teaching sound design, sound engineering, and/or related courses. The successful candidate will teach two, 3-credit courses each semester while maintaining the high level of creative work appropriate for a Research I university. They will assist in supervising, advising, and mentoring students in both the BA and MFA programs. Consultation with the Audio/Media Supervisor on the maintenance and upgrading of equipment and facilities related to sound technology in the department is important to the growth of the program and the department. Additionally, occasional designs for departmental productions may be required. Candidates will be evaluated according to a) overall quality of their artistic and technical training and creative work, b) relevance of their creative research to the department's academic priorities and fields of inquiry, c) evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a teacher, and d) strength of recommendations.
