The Fellowships and Scholarships Advisor provides personalized support and guidance to Vanderbilt students pursuing prestigious external fellowships awards in one-on-one and group settings. This position will develop innovative recruitment strategies to encourage a diverse candidate pool; undertake campus outreach, including developing and leading programs and workshops; advise and support students; and cultivate additional participation and collaboration with faculty, academic programs, and departments.
This position requires exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. In addition, the individual must be able to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision, including meeting deadlines established by external agencies. This individual will lead initiatives related to national and international competitive scholarships including, but not limited to the Fulbright, Truman, Goldwater, Churchill, James C. Gaither Junior Fellows, Luce, and Udall awards.
The Vanderbilt Career Center serves undergraduates enrolled full-time in the Blair School of Music, College of Arts and Science, School of Engineering and Peabody College. In addition the Center provides career coaching to recent graduates (0-2 years) after graduation. The Center provides many opportunities for students to learn about and explore professional opportunities including internships, career coaching, credit-based career courses, workshops, career panels, on-campus recruiting, job fairs, and industry-based Treks. The Career Center also supports students who are seeking graduate school admission as well as prestigious scholarships and fellowships. The Center consists of a leadership team, a coaching team, an employer relations team, and support staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Fellowships Recruitment and Advising:
Promote knowledge of awards opportunities, including application requirements, processes, and deadlines, through workshops, classroom presentations, and other activities. Develop innovative recruitment strategies for candidates including programs and presentations to faculty, departments, student groups, etc. Provide direct coaching services to students seeking opportunities, including discussing relevant fellowships opportunities and providing review of application materials such as resumes, personal statements, and essay question answers.
Fellowships Application Process Management:
Manage the institutional elements of fellowships application processes, including submitting university-sponsored applications according to foundation guidelines, establishing advising committees, and writing and/or procuring institutional endorsement letters. As needed, provide feedback to letter of recommendation writers. Oversee the communication plan for services, including drafting articles for publication about award recipients.
Cultivate relationships with faculty, departments, and academic programs to ensure cross-campus participation in identifying and mentoring candidates, serving on selection committee, and providing letters of support. Develop and maintain relationships with external funding agencies and foundations, ensuring appropriate campus preparation and selection procedures.
