The Associate Director is part of the Career Center at Vanderbilt University and is the key administrator in organizing the overall strategy for post-baccalaureate opportunities, including fellowships, scholarships, and graduate/professional study. This position works closely with the Career Coaching and Employer Relations teams in the Career Center, as well as with Vanderbilt students, faculty, administrators, and representatives from other institutions and external organizations. It is expected that the individual will develop and enhance undergraduate awareness of graduate and professional study and scholarship opportunities through advising, workshops and presentations; undertake campus outreach; create administrative procedures and advising plans; cultivate additional participation and collaboration with faculty, academic programs, and departments; and critically assess the performance of the post-baccalaureate initiative. In addition, the Associate Director will train and update career coaches on post-baccalaureate study and scholarship opportunities.
The Vanderbilt Career Center serves undergraduates enrolled full-time in the Blair School of Music, College of Arts and Science, School of Engineering and Peabody College. In addition, the Center provides career coaching to recent graduates (0-2 years) after graduation. The Center provides many opportunities for students to learn about and explore professional opportunities including internships, career coaching, credit-based career courses, workshops, career panels, on-campus recruiting, job fairs, and industry-based Treks. The Career Center also supports students who are seeking graduate school admission as well as prestigious scholarships and fellowships. The Center consists of a leadership team, a coaching team, an employer relations team, and support staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide overall structure and design for post-baccalaureate opportunities programming including strategic planning and management of administrative procedures.
Determine key duties of Career Center staff to ensure clear understanding of responsibilities.
Ensure all those affiliated with the program are trained and knowledgeable about their area of activity.
Directly supervise staff members.
Student Recruitment and Coaching
Partner with Career Center staff and others to provide workshops, classroom presentations, and other activities to ensure widespread knowledge of opportunities to increase the number and quality of applicants for fellowships and scholarships.
Provide coaching services to students seeking post-baccalaureate opportunities.
Ensure the Career Center team is trained, updated and informed about post-baccalaureate opportunities and graduate study advising and develop ways in which they can support the initiatives.
Promote internal and external awareness of the program to increase program participation of both students and faculty. Cultivate relationships with faculty, departments, and academic programs to ensure cross-campus participation in identifying and mentoring candidates, serving on selection committees, and providing letters of support.
Develop and maintain relationships with external funding agencies and foundations, ensuring appropriate campus preparation and selection procedures. Represent Vanderbilt at regional and national conferences as needed.
Manage the overall process for the program including publicizing and promoting opportunities and deadlines and establishing advising committees.
Develop innovative strategies for programs and presentations to faculty, departments, student groups, etc.
Oversee the communication plan for services, including an enhanced website presence.
This position has supervisory responsibility over two career coaches with possible team expansion with future hires. As part of the Career Center Leadership Team, this person will participate in the hiring process for new direct reports. This position reports administratively and functionally to the Executive Director.
