Applications accepted only online at www.tarleton.edu/jobs The Department of Fine Arts at Tarleton State University seeks applications for an Artist-in-Residence for the 2020/2021 academic year. This is a 9-month, half-time (20 hours per week) position- September 1, 2020 â“ May 31, 2021 The selected artist will work directly with the Tarleton State University students and/or the larger community on a project that will culminate in an exhibition or public event in the TSU Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Gallery at the conclusion of the residency period. The selected artist will be given a space to work on campus, and is expected to be accessible to the Department of Fine Arts community, and to develop a relationship with Digital Media Studies (DMS) and Art students through workshops, lectures, or talks to be scheduled at the artistâ™s discretion in a way that makes sense to their project and practice. The position is a 9-month, half-time (20 hours per week), non-tenure track position. Tarleton State University, located in Stephenville, Texas (about an hour from the Dallas-Fort Worth metro complex) is a school committed to diversity: we welcome proposals from a diverse pool of applicants including diverse working methods and studio practices. With a comprehensive Digital Media Studies and Visual Arts programs operating within the larger Department of Fine Arts, TSUâ™s goal relevant to the 2020-2021 AIR position is the completion of a project that will benefit student education in the DMS and Art tracks, and the Tarleton community at large. Selection Criteria Applications from both emerging and established artists are encouraged. Furthermore, the scope of the kind of work that will be considered for this position is large: we are looking for visual artists in any medium (painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, or any combination thereof) or using/incorporating digital technologies, including the design arts (graphic design, object design, architectural/designed interiors practices, speculative design, game/video/illustration, photography, interactive media etc.). **We prefer artists who have a Masters of Fine Art in an Art or Design field, but are open to accomplished artists with a BFA or BA in Art or Design. Artists will be chosen on the basis of the quality of their work, the strength of their proposal, and the potential impact of their project on the Tarleton community, especially Art and Digital Media Studies undergraduates. The artist in residence may elect to teach but is not required to. The AIR is expected to have significant interaction with students in the form of lectures, workshops, open studio time, visits to classes, participation in critiques, and other informal conversations. This is up to the discretion of the artist and should be included in the proposal. Compensation The selected artist will receive a $18,000 stipend (subject to payroll taxes) to be paid out monthly over the course of the school year to cover project related expenses and living costs (including travel). Relevant Dates Deadline for Submission The deadline for application is April 10, 2020. Notification Date All applicants will be notified of their status as soon as possible. Residency Dates: September 1, 2020 â“ May 31, 2021. Campus Facilities: TSU Digital Media Studies and Art facilities and others are comprehensive and open to the use of the Visiting Artist, and may be used for project development around course schedules. Some facilities include: Artist in Residence Studio The chosen artist will be given a secure 450 square foot space to work in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center. Digital Media Studies â—¦ Motion Capture Lab â—¦ Computer Lab with Adobe Suite, and Animation/Video Editing Software. The computer labs have the major Autodesk software, Unreal 4, Visual Studios, Blade, Motionbuilder, Aspire, Foundry packages. In addition, Arnold Render and Renderman and xCode â—¦ Digital Cameras and Video Equipment, including DSLRs and Drones â—¦ Light Tables â—¦ Large format inkjet printers (up to 48 inches wide) Visual Art â—¦ Photo Documentation Studio â—¦ Printmaking Equipment â—¦ Entry Level Woodshop (more advanced equipment is found in the Theater Woodshop) â—¦ 3D Printer â—¦ Laser Cutter â—¦ CNC Library Maker Spot 3D printing in a variety of sizes and a variety of colors, scanning and poster printing, camera and computer development kits. Responsibilities: 10% Assist staff and administration by designing artwork that promotes university activities. 20% Interact with students in the form of lectures, workshops, open studio time, and visits to classes which includes participation in critiques, and other informal conversations. 5% Show support for student creativity by attending student art shows. 5% Perform other duties as assigned. Required Education/Experience/Skills: Experience as an emerging or established professional artist. Demonstrated excellence in artistic endeavors. Demonstrated commitment to the exploration of innovative approaches to fine art. Demonstrated ability to engage with the university community. Recognized reputation in their field. Demonstrated ability to educate students in the professional standards of the field. Preferred Education/Experience/Skills: Artists whose practices are interdisciplinary in nature, especially those whose work incorporates elements of digital media in addition to traditional fine arts disciplines (painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking); and/or Artists who aim to work in tandem with other departments within the university through a hybrid focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, Fashion, Music, Theater, and Agriculture among others.
