The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington (UW) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in seismology at the Assistant Professor level. Areas of specialization might include, but are not limited to: earthquake source processes, volcano seismology, and structural seismology.
All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The new hire will be expected to build a vibrant and externally-funded research program that contributes to science of fundamental significance. The new hire will contribute to the undergraduate core curriculum and also teach graduate courses related to their expertise.This position is a full-time, tenure track position with a 9-month service period.The anticipated start date is September 1, 2020.

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences (https://ess.uw.edu), part of the College of the Environment, has four broad and overlapping focus areas: the solid Earth, surface processes, geobiology, and space/planetary studies. The departmental community includes 42 research and teaching faculty, 90 graduate students, and 200 undergraduate majors. The department hosts the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (https://pnsn.org), the regional member of the national seismic system, with a UW staff of 18, a rapidly growing network of more than 350 seismic stations, and considerable seismological and computational facilities. The department is also home to a USGS group focused on earthquakes and other natural hazards in the Pacific Northwest. We seek a colleague whose research is grounded in seismological observation, and who is versatile and innovative in its use to address fundamental scientific questions about the Earth. We are particularly interested in someone with the potential to contribute collaboratively to a strong, interdisciplinary thematic focus on subduction zone science at UW, and who will interact with the diverse group of faculty and researchers across our campus linked to that initiative. They will demonstrate a commitment to teaching and mentoring in a diverse and inclusive university setting. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in geophysics, seismology or a related field at the time of employment.
