Oberlin College & Conservatory (Oberlin) seeks a collaborative, strategic, and visionary leader to be the next Dean of the Conservatory of Music (Conservatory), one of the world’s premier conservatories and an integral part of one of the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges. This is an opportunity to build on the Conservatory’s distinguished history of artistic and academic excellence and expand the institution’s role as an innovative leader in its field.
The Dean will join Oberlin at an exciting moment in its history. With the arrival of President Carmen Twillie Ambar as Oberlin’s 15th President in May 2017, the institution has gone through an unprecedented process of self-examination and strategic reimagining in an effort to catapult Oberlin into a new chapter of innovation, impact, and sustainability. As a result of this work, Oberlin is experiencing unprecedented levels of transparency and collaboration across its multiple and complex parts, including the Conservatory of Music, the College of Arts & Sciences (A&S), the Allen Memorial Art Museum, and the robust library system.
As an integral member of Oberlin’s senior leadership team, and working in tandem with President Ambar, as well as the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, the Dean of the Conservatory will have a significant opportunity to impact the long-term success of the Conservatory. Oberlin is seeking a Dean who will provide the vision, imagination and planful leadership required to enable the Conservatory to continue to foster the musical, intellectual, and creative development of its young artists, faculty, and staff, while enhancing the institution’s capacity to prepare them for successful futures.
The successful candidate will have outstanding musical credentials, demonstrated success in managing organizational change, a track record of strong fiscal stewardship, and excellent relationship-building and fundraising skills. The capacity to be an effective advocate and ambassador for the Conservatory, both internally and with a wide variety of external audiences, is essential.
