Develop a strategic plan and overall arc of season programming, providing clear and thoughtful long-range planning to incorporate arts events currently touring, projected to tour, and in development phase.
Maintain constant communication with agents, artists, and other presenters to stay current on tour routing, artist availability, requested terms for engagements, audience and presenter responses to the work and the working relationships with the artists.
Thoroughly investigate and research touring artists available in a given season by reading reviews and descriptive materials, watching video footage, and traveling as needed to see live performances and meet with artistic directors, agents and tour representatives.
Carefully program dates within the constraints of the academic calendar to ensure maximum student engagement and an appealing timeline for public participation.
Provide content to the marketing, engagement and development teams for the creation of marketing and educational materials, season brochures, grant applications, etc., meeting predetermined deadlines.
Review, approve & sign contracts and purchase orders for Northrop programming.
Conduct detailed training sessions to explain the upcoming programming to members of the marketing, engagement, development, ticketing, production and front of house teams, so that all will feel enthusiastic about the work, informed about production demands and sales goals, and confident in securing funding and speaking about the work to our patrons.
Articulate programming choices and help demystify abstract work in a variety of contexts including large speaking engagements, advisory board meetings, pre-show artist interviews, post-show discussions, Q&A sessions and classroom settings etc.
Support and seek out opportunities for donors and patrons to meet/engage with artists, including social gatherings and events.
In collaboration with other Northrop team members and University departments, program content for the Northrop Gallery, making thematic connections to other institutional programming and leveraging key partnerships.
Oversee program selections for the Northrop Film Series, ensuring appropriate thematic connections to the Northrop Dance Season.
Imagine and envision additional uses, new concepts, and partnerships for Northrop public spaces such as Northrop Gallery exhibits, outdoor events and lobby displays, participating in the process from ideation through implementation with other Northrop teams and leaders.
Attend all performances, meet and greet audience members, gathering feedback about the events, and encouraging repeat attendance. Read and respond thoughtfully to audience feedback and criticism.
Supervise one FTE in artist services dealing with the hotel, transportation, and catering needs of artists, managing contracts and payments through the University system, and Visa application procedures in the case of international artists.
Negotiate artist fees and additional contract terms such as hotel room nights, local transportation, crew requirements, access to venue, additional equipment rentals and other requests on behalf of Northrop.
In collaboration with Northrop’s technical director and artists’ representatives, secure the most up-to-date technical information for productions being considered, assuring compliance with Northrop stage specifications and equipment availability. Develop production budgets for each show by analyzing and discussing all details related to the technical and production elements.
Develop overall show budgets for each event that incorporate artists’ fees, technical requirements, travel and hotel needs, orchestral costs, and any other elements that might impact cost to present, adhering to the overall season budget.
Work with the director of marketing to determine ticket prices, discount plans, and thresholds for dynamic pricing, with consideration for market demand and to achieve revenue and attendance goals.
In collaboration with Northrop’s development team, identify fundraising opportunities and support the development of data-driven funding proposals and reports. Attend meetings with funders/donors as appropriate.
Relationship and collaboration with University and external partners:
Seek opportunities to provide meaningful student engagement with Northrop programming, recommending potential academic connections and approaching potential University partners to develop relevant relationships and activities.
Proactively meet with community and University partners, particularly those programs housed within Northrop (the University Honors Program, Institute for Advanced Study and the College of Design’s Innovation Lab), to identify, discuss and pursue potential projects and identify collaborative activities and connections in future seasons, engaging Northrop’s campus and community engagement coordinator as appropriate.
Represent and advocate for Northrop in public situations and in national membership organizations such as Arts Presenters, Major University Presenters, Minnesota Citizens for the Arts, etc., sharing information on best practices with the Northrop team.
Take a leadership role in the Northrop Advisory Board and Northrop Organ Committee, and participate on other boards and committees as appropriate.
· Bachelor’s degree and eight years of experience in a nonprofit performing arts organization in a leadership programming role.
· Strong knowledge of and background in dance programming.
· Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
· Ability to create and adhere to schedules, budgets and deadlines.
· Strong analytical, organizational and project management skills.
· High degree of initiative and attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
· Working knowledge of performance agreements and contracts, and the ability to comprehend technical riders.
· Working knowledge of show budgets and settlements and experience with day-to-day fiscal management and accountability.
The ideal candidate will have:
· A B.A. or B.F.A. in an arts related field.
· A commitment to upholding Northrop’s history of excellence in dance programming and a strong desire to retain and expand the trust of our subscribers, audiences and partners.
· A highly developed dance aesthetic that understands and appreciates all forms of dance, including classical and ballet, modern and contemporary, street and culturally specific forms.
· A programming philosophy that respects the validity of recognized artists and critically acclaimed work, yet seeks out new and diverse artistic voices that ensure community engagement and audience development.
· A solid understanding of marketing, ticketing, engagement, development, production and front of house operations and a desire to work collaboratively with these teams.
· Experience working in an academic setting.
· The ability to work both collaboratively and independently as appropriate.
· An approachable demeanor and a welcoming, inclusive and encouraging spirit.
· Familiarity with organ music, programs and performers, and new ideas to take advantage of Northrop’s unique instrument.
· Experience programming a variety of genres.
· A creative spirit who loves to collaborate, ideate, dream about and implement the initiatives that will help lead Northrop into the future as an innovative, relevant home for all.
