The Technical Director works with OZ Arts Production Manager, Artistic Director and other staff to support the artistic, programs, both on and off-site, ensuring the delivery of world class standard presentations with the highest caliber safety, technical and logistical procedures specific to artists, audiences and staff. The Technical Director is responsible for conducting research, producing technical drawings, managing crew and overseeing maintenance and upkeep of technical instruments as well as facility safety and operations. The Technical Director also operates as a liaison with Infinity Hospitality Group for rental events at the OZ facility.
Responsibilities of Technical Director:
Assist OZ Arts’ Production Manager & Rental Event Coordinators in the analysis of the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production/event dates.
Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, video, communications equipment and the use and maintenance of stage facilities on a daily basis, including any supplementary rental equipment.
Co-design, set up, maintain, and operate lighting, video and sometimes basic sound systems for theatre, dance, music, visual art and other productions, projects and events as part of OZ Arts curatorial program or supporting events; assist guest designers and artists with specific technical needs as outlined by their riders and OZ Production Management.
Work with OZ Arts Production Manager to determine cable runs for all technical components, lighting, video and sound, based on the technical specifications from touring shows and vendors needs to fulfill the task, assist in analysis of rigging load limitations, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs.
Supervise and assist with set and stage construction and management on a daily basis.
Assist OZ Arts’ Production Manager & Rental Event Coordinators in recruiting, training and assignment of tasks to paid technical overhire crew for individual shows and events.
Orient facility renters and visiting production personnel to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of the facilities operations; facilitate the use of the technical equipment by the visiting company and others engaged by or renting the facility.
Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, elevated work platforms and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints and in consideration of presentation calendar; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
Make recommendations to the OZ Arts Production Manager regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
Maintain technical inventory and order specialized supplies, oversee maintenance weeks to clean all equipment and have specialists re-certify equipment (e.g. scissor lifts, chain motors).
Run crews, oversee load-ins/outs, operate consoles as needed for rehearsals and shows, assist OZ Arts PM to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of the mounting of the show/event and reconcile weekly time sheets with the PM for processing overhire crew payment.
Assist the CFO/Operations Manager in overseeing the grounds management, communicate with vendors (landscape gardeners, plumbers, maintenance crews, pest control, etc.) to ensure continuous, optimal, safe and clean presentation of facilities and grounds, help with general maintenance of the facility (e.g. replace light bulbs, schedule fire alarm tests, fire extinguisher checks, help with common day to day building issues that may occur and need attention to), identify suitable vendor/s to solve issues if they can not be fixed internally.
Liaise with OZ Arts Staff & Infinity Hospitality Event Coordinators and vendors to confirm schedule in advance for grounds upkeep, including sprinkler irrigation system on/off according to these schedules.
Flexible work week with expectation to work some nights and weekends.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in performance or art-related field.
Proficiency in CAD or Vectorworks programs
Suitable level of experience on ETC - ION lighting console
Ability to analyze and evaluate technical support needs for variety of events and performances
Electrician certificate or proven high level knowledge of safe, code, power tie in and distribution
Assist in planning, developing, scheduling and providing the technical support required for each event or performance
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing for effective working relationships with vendors, co-workers, sponsors, and others.
Ability to listen, ask questions and implement accordingly.
Proficiency in set design and construction
Proficiency in lighting design
Basic knowledge of sound and video systems, at a minimum
Experience overseeing stage crews and volunteers
Skills to perform minor repairs and execute preventative maintenance on equipment
Ability to maintain inventory of necessary supplies
Maintain irregular and extended working hours
Able to lift, push or pull objects up to 100 lbs. using appropriate tools.
Ability to perform tasks at elevated heights/ on elevated platform.
