McCarter Theatre Center is accepting applications for the position of Prop Artisan. Applicants must have strong furniture upholstery and refinishing skills, proficiency in sewing and general crafts, as well as basic carpentry and painting skills. Carving, casting and molding skills are a plus. The ideal candidate will combine artistic ability with knowledge of period styles and fine workmanship, accept and incorporate feedback, be able to work independently, possess a collaborative mindset, and be committed to maintaining safe working practices. Duties include interpreting design drawings; building and modifying props with various materials and finishes; loading-in, dressing and striking productions in the theatre; maintenance projects for the prop shop; and driving a van or box truck. Other duties may include additional stage work, including loading in outside productions, and occasionally running a show.
Position requirements include a minimum of two years professional theater experience, a valid driver’s license, a competent understanding of power tools, and the ability to the ability to lift and maneuver up to 75 pounds, climb ladders, and work at heights (including in a personal lift). The Prop Artisan reports to the Prop Master. Full-time seasonal position regularly runs from mid-August to mid-May.
Base salary of $820/week plus overtime.
