ABOUT LA MASTER CHORALE: The Los Angeles Master Chorale is widely recognized as one of the country’s leading professional vocal ensembles and one of Southern California’s most vibrant cultural treasures. Presenting its own concert series each season, the Master Chorale performs choral music from the earliest writing to contemporary compositions, striking a balance between innovation and tradition. The Master Chorale was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2017, and has been awarded three ASCAP/Chorus America Awards for Adventurous Programming as well as Chorus America’s prestigious Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence. The Master Chorale has performed in more than 500 concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at both Disney Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, and has toured with the orchestra to Europe and New York City.
THE OPPORTUNITY: The Chief Development Officer will be an innovative, forward-thinking development leader with exceptional interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism and integrity. Reporting to the President & CEO, the CDO is responsible for leading an operationally complex Development Department to achieve the organization’s contributed revenue goals. As a member of the senior management team involved in setting the direction of the overall organization, the CDO will be committed to the Master Chorale’s mission and be a key leader in sharing and promoting its mission and work with donors, volunteers, community members, staff, and patrons. The CDO also provides leadership to the Board of Director’s Development Committee. S/he will be charged with readying the organization for a possible future campaign. Reporting to the CDO is a team that includes the Annual Fund Manager, Institutional Giving Manager, and Manager of Special Events.
FUNDING: The Master Chorale has a current operating budget of $5.2 million, with a contributed revenue goal of $3.5 million per year, and an endowment of approximately $3 million. The organization expects to substantially increase contributed revenues over time as it pursues bold strategic initiatives.
Track record of success building, leading, and growing development programs for not-for-profit organizations, preferably arts-related.
An accomplished front-line major gift solicitor.
A generalist with knowledge of best practices in all areas of fundraising, annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, corporate giving, contracts and grants, special events, capital and other campaigns.
Knowledge of the Los Angeles philanthropic community.
Able to think strategically, generate new ideas, set priorities, execute goals and objectives, and meet deadlines.
Experience working with a sophisticated, engaged Board of Directors.
Well-developed communication and presentation skills.
Effective delegator able to empower staff, set agendas, lead meetings, document activities, and measure progress.
Able to leverage digital and social media technology in service of philanthropy.
Working knowledge of Tessitura or similar CRM software.
Ability to travel and to attend evening/weekend events and activities, as needed.
Bachelor’s degree is required; a graduate degree is preferred. CFRE is a plus.
