ABOUT THE PHILHARMONIC: The New York Philharmonic is at a pivotal moment in the institution’s history. Under the leadership of Deborah Borda, who is returning to the Philharmonic after a 17-year successful tenure with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the institution is poised for a transformational and vibrant future. At the same time, the Philharmonic’s Music Director Designate, Jaap van Zweden, anticipates his inaugural season.
Founded in 1842, the Philharmonic is the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, and one of the oldest in the world. By the end of this season, the Philharmonic will have connected with up to 50 million music lovers through live concerts in NYC and on its worldwide tours and residencies; digital recording series; international broadcasts on television, radio, and online; and as a major resource through its varied education programs. This season celebrates two major milestones: the Orchestra’s 175th anniversary, and Alan Gilbert’s farewell season as Music Director. A longtime leader in American musical life, the Philharmonic has become renowned around the globe, having appeared in 432 cities in 63 countries on 5 continents.
THE OPPORTUNITY: The Chief Philanthropy Officer is a member of the leadership team and an active participant in making strategic decisions that impact the Philharmonic. In partnership with the President & CEO, Executive Director, Board of Directors, and colleagues, the CPO will be expected to create and execute a comprehensive advancement strategy to drive philanthropic support income. S/he will lead both annual and campaign efforts, and increase and diversify the donor base. The CPO will also work closely with the President & CEO and Board to support and maximize their engagement in advancement. The CPO reports to the newly appointed President & CEO, and will lead a team of 26.
FUNDING: The Philharmonic has a current annual operating budget of approximately $75 million. About $30 million of the budget is from philanthropic support.
Successful record driving growth and success in advancement, preferably in a major cultural institution.
Proven ability to plan and implement a comprehensive advancement program and team.
Track record of building/rebuilding programs and teams.
Experience working with a sophisticated donor base; familiarity with the New York philanthropic community.
Strategic—able to plan for the future and also deliver on current goals and objectives.
Major campaign leadership experience.
Success as a front-line cultivator and solicitor of major gifts.
Capacity to foster and expand relationships with existing donors and to tap into new, diverse supporters.
Experience working effectively with board members and volunteer leadership.
A polished communicator.
Comfortable employing traditional and on-trend approaches in philanthropy, including digital/social media.
Genuine passion for the Philharmonic mission.
Diplomatic and ambassadorial.
Ability to regularly attend evening and weekend events and to travel as necessary.
Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is a plus.
